The reason i am looking for a 4cyl instead of a V6 becuase the V6 uses more gas than a 4 cylinder. I want a fuel efficient automatic transmission and reliable off road veichle.
It seems that its so hard to find a toyota 4runner used like this. All of the used 4runners i see for sale are V6.

4 cylinder 4x4 would be the later model 4runner like the 88-89. much lighter too and can still do the job

The last thing you want to do on a hill is not have enough power to get up it, and have to get towed out. It's a shame that the domestic market has a shortage of compact turbo diesel engines for vehicles like the 4runner. Japanese manufacturers have been making excellent diesels for decades, however, very few make it to US soil.
