When Should I change oil on a 2000 Toyota Solara?

I have a 2000 toyota solara and the dealer recommends me to change the oil every 5k miles or 6 months..whichever comes first..I don't drive around a lot so the 6 months usually come before the 5 k miles..so what do you think is best for me?When Should I change oil on a 2000 Toyota Solara?The dealer always wants you to get an oil change way too often. THis is the best advice. Use Mobil One or ELF oil. THey have a special formula JUST for Toyota engines. They are SYNTHETIC oils. That means that they have properties that will protect expensive engine guts for longer periods of time. THey will kepp things clean and won't create sludge and varnish and other unwanted power robbing deposits. Your valve lifters will LOVE you. You will have less to worry about. You can change it once a year, safely!!! I have gotten to the point that I only change the oil when it looks dark or thicker than usual. You should get in the habit of looking under your own hood and reading your dipstick. Another tip. KEEP YOUR IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE show room clean. It affects fuel mileage. It affects power. It also affects the longevity of oil life. When it is clean, the engine wastes no fuel. When it gets dirty, there is more chance of carbon formationon piston rings, valves, and other places. If they say 7500 miles then it is 7500 miles especially in California where you don't have extremely hot or cold temperatures most of the year.



Check your manual. If your driving style calls for severe use then change it more often. Also, use the grade that your manual says to use.

Do the 5K miles but don't worry about going over a little bit. Oil is better today then it was 10 years ago so we don't have to change it as often. It perfectly ok to go 7K between changes and your Solara will be just fine. People change their oil way to often because the repair shops want to make money on other things they find wrong with your car. Its a way to get you in so they can rake you over the coals. As Pedro said, if you heat the car up good a few times a week by stop and go driving or a fairly decent road trip, which will evaporate any moisture built up in the engine, then go the full 5k.

yes, after 5 or 6k miles it SHOULD be changed but its no harm either way. just as long as it doesnt burn oil, then you'd have to change it alot more often. but it shoudnt be burnin any oil if its a modern car like that! best of luck with your car!
