How much does it cost to get an engine rebuilt on a toyota truck?

This is the ad: "1986 Toyota Long Bed Pickup Truck 22R 150000. This was a great truck until it sprung an oil leak. I had the front seal replaced but it was the rear seal, now it knocks. Lots of newer parts, tires, master cylinder, clutch cylinder, starter, brakes, battery. I want to have the engine rebuilt but my wife wants it outta' here. $650.00 or first offer! "

The 22R is an "easy" engine to work on. The tolerances aren't as tight as some other, more modern engines, and they just plain run forever.



There's a good chance that this engine will keep running, knock and all, for a looooong time. I'd try some Castrol Syntec or Slick-50. (I know the "experts" say it doesn't help but I've seen it help in older engines)



If you've got the time and some mechanical ability (and a place to work) this wouldn't be a bad project to take on. There are several really good dvds with step-by-step instructions for rebuilding this motor.



If all else fails a rebuilt 22re can be had for $500-1500. It's a much simpler engine than the v-6. The engine bay is still pretty tight, but it's easier to work around the 4-cyl than the 6.



You should end up with a decent truck for a couple grand tops. Make sure you check it out thoroughly and evaluate the total cost to get it roadworthy! "Small" things like suspension parts and electrical problems can add up too.

Now remember you got to pull that motor and then get it rebuilt and then put it back . A little work and a little money and you should have a pretty nice truck that will probably out live you . I have a little bity teeny tiny toyota truck that's a 1992 model with 181,000 miles on it that my dad bought new . I got it when he died and it's been a great truck. I'd make him an offer of 450 or 500 . Wouldn't go over that . Remember it's a 86 model and you know you got to put another 8 or 9 or more into it so your looking at or around 15 hundred bucks into a 22 year old truck. Only way to get your money back out of that would be to drive it out . If your looking to buy and keep and drive then go for it . If your looking to make a profit , forget it. Think , 22 yr old truck.
